    Mysterious Square

This attached square has been showing up on the center of my desktop. I tried uninstalling my recent updates, but nothing's working.

    Any thoughts?

Try to solve using clean boot procedure
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

If that does not work use system restore going back a few days before the problem began.

That happens to me on occasion when parts of various error messages show up on my Desktop. I think the first (and most important) thing to do is to try to identify what the full message is actually saying, in case there is an action that you have to take. For that, you might try right-clicking and double-clicking on it to see if you can open it, or at least get more information about it. Another way to possibly view more of the undisplayed text is to temporarily reduce your DPI, with the hope that you'll be able to see more of the text in the portion of the error message.

I finally realized it was a gadget gone bad. Once I removed it from my gadget list, the square was gone.
