I have had the drag'n drop problem on and off ever since I re-installed W7x64pro on my Dell Precision M4400 laptop. The d'n'd problem always showed up together with the clicking-Chrome-tab-closes-it problem. None of the programs mentioned above are installed on the laptop, and it is not a stuck ESC or Ctrl key. It seems to be a problem with the touch pad though, probably HW but could be drivers. I disabled the touch pad and use only a USB mouse, and now it seems to work fine.

I have experienced this for the first time just now. Looked everywhere until I found this thread.
The problem was the Esc key. My keyboard is new and really don't know how it could be stuck. Didn't need any restart and it was not any program's fault.

I had a user having this same issue. They had a laptop docked with dual monitors and the lid down. The usb keyboard was fine, but the laptop keyboard had several key that were stuck in the down position. I have also had a co-worker have a similar issue but the esc key was stuck. Pressing it several time stopped a process that was hung up. So there can be similar problems with different fixes available...

Hello. I've been having the drag'n drop problem constantly for roughly 48 hours now and it's driving me nuts. As a person explained earlier it showed up with the clicking chrome tabs closes the tabs and even the browser If I'd click the last tab. I have two keyboards connected to my PC, aswell as two mouses. I have disconnected both the keyboards and been switching between both the mouses to see if they could be the problem. but the problem still persists. I also tried them on a different computer where they work just fine. I then proceeded with re-installling my entire Windows (Windows 7 64pro) Thinking that would solve it. But it did nothing. I can drag icons around on my desktop, but it won't drop. Neither can I drag them into different folders, or drag icons/files out of folders to the desktop. I also tried USB-rooting. Nothing helps the slightest.
So in my case, unlike most other people. It's not a STICKY-ESC button. And most likely not a Program I've installed as I re-installed my entire computer. I look forward to all the help I can get. Also sorry if I made myself unclear. English is not my first language :)

I came to this thread due to having a similar problem. I was using VMware at the time.

This is a common problem if using virtual machines (VMware, etc) - but also in some other cases, an existing drag-and-drop operation can be interrupted or defocused on the way. For most cases, it's indeed a "sticky Esc" problem, but not due to physical debris under the key, rather in the fact that the OS thinks there is an existing operation in progress.

To undo this, simply attempt another drag-and-drop operation. While you keep the left mouse button pressed down, also press the Esc key on your keyboard. This should free up the OS and return you to normal. Just pressing Esc without pressing LMB may not be enough. I found this solution on the Microsoft help pages and it worked for me.

Simply press "ESC" key multiple (2-4) times. It will work.

This is an old thread, but simply hitting the "Esc" key resolved this issue for me.

Hope this helps someone else in the future.

Thanks to all - it WAS the ESC key! And, all I had to do is tap it just once. Who would have thought! You saved me from the disruption of a reboot!
