Try Free Commander as an alternative to Windows Explorer.

Free Commander does just what you're looking for. When you select a group of items, and you sort on a particular column heading or re-sort on a different column, the original selected items remain selected throughout.

Even further, if you select a group of items (e.g. a bunch of new ZIP/RAR files) and then right-click on the group (e.g. to invoke WINRAR from the context menu, to unzip each of the selected group), when the invoked function is completed the selected items will STILL REMAIN SELECTED (e.g. so that you can now DELETE the whole group of ZIP/RAR files you may not need any longer).

Free Commander is a 1-pane/2-pane functional alternative to Windows Explorer, but looks and feels like the "old fashioned" Windows Explorer from WinXP (or even Win98), so you might truly prefer it. It's got lots of additional functionality, and its interface (e.g. toolbar) can be customized as you want.
