Any HP dv6700 laptop users here? Vista to 7 Ultimate help.

there is a folder named SWsetup in C:/SWsetup located in it all programs and drivers
I have hidden and system files showing and I have no SWsetup directory on my machine.

I did a clean install of win 7, no upgrade or dual boot with Vista.

Did you get your caps lock/num lock and scroll lock lights working with win 7?

Thanks

Diana.

there is a folder named SWsetup in C:/SWsetup located in it all programs and drivers

This is the folder located in C: root to which the drivers downloaded from HP webpage unzip, worth backing up after everything's installed.

I want to ask u a question I have this folder but I don't know can it work for 32-bit and 64-bit or it will work for the type of windows installed on my laptop????

OS
Windows Vista 32-Bit
It depends on whether the original drivers unzipped to SWSetup were of the same bit-version, or contain both.

You can try running the Setup .exe for the driver from within its sub-folder, or browsing there from Device Manager driver>Update Driver tab. If it doesn't install or pick up the driver, go to the HP Support Downloads webpage for the exact model to download and install the correct driver, which will also unzip to SWSetup.

i have win vista which came with the laptop and it is 32-bit and the SWsetup folder still in C i didn't remove it and i want to install win 7 ultimate but i don't know which should i install 32 or 64 bit in order to be sure that the drivers in SWsetup will work or not

You should determine which bit-version to install based on specs of the machine:
32 bit vs 64 bit Comparison - Windows 7 Forums
64-bit More than just the RAM bit-tech.net

The Win7 installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for that model computer or Device.

I would save SWSetup folder as a backup to use only after exhausting the first options.

I would also not change out any drivers given by installer or optional Updates unless performance problems are verified to be caused by them.

both 32-bit and 64-bit can work on my laptop but i am asking about the drivers in the SWsetup folder because there is no drivers for windows 7 on the HP site

You can use Vista drivers for Win7. For any drivers not provided by Win7 installer or optional Windows Updates, I would get them first from the website, then browse SWSetup.

If you're concerned about SWSetup also being available for missing drivers then reinstall the same bit-version as is on the machine now. Check at Computer>Properties page to see which it is.

I did install Win 7 64 bit on a spare drive just for the hell of it but some of the Vista drivers from the HP site either didn't work or weren't available for 64 bit.

I cant really remember but I had problems with 64 bit and the DV6885

Your machine may not have all of the same components as mine such as chipset, network adapter, sound card etc:

You can generate a report of the components used in your pc. I use a program called Everest but I believe there's a native program in win 7 that does the same thing. I just cant remember what it's called.
Then just go to the HP site and grab the drivers you will need and save them to a jump drive or ext drive.

Hi Diana,

Did you ever figure out the problem? I have the same model computer and just installed win 7 32 bit. I read for the potential of many issues when installing win 7 on dv6885se, but thought I would try still. On the device manager there are 2 drivers showing that are not installed after all of the updates. I thought it is the SD card but it works fine. The DVD, camera, all work fine. The CAPS and Num Lock lights is the only thing that doesn't work as of now.

Let me know if you had any other issued beyond that.

Thanks

I actually had no issues. Turns out that the caps light LED is blown.
The Scroll/Num lock lights both work fine.
I did set the caps lock key to beep via the "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Make the keyboard easier to use" function.

I still have all of the Vista drivers that I downloaded from HP.
If I recall correctly the only ones I didn't install were the HP adviser crap and the Synaptics touch-pad drivers.

If you post a report of your devices as suggested by Greg I can compare it with mine and hopefully we can figure out exactly what is missing. ;)
