Desktop icons display other desktop icons.

My problem began when i was playing my xbox and talking to a friend at the same time. I was talking to him about pokemon and wanted him to watch a certain part in a random episode so i open up internet explorer and go to the website streaming all the episodes and then i get a pop up telling me that the page i was currently on was not safe and would perform a system scan. I immediately closed the window and everything seemed to be fine. This had never happened to me before on the website so i opened up internet explorer again and went back to the website and the next thing that happens is my desktop image goes black and every icon disappeared for only a few seconds and then re-appeared. I didnt know what to do so i restarted my computer and when i logged back on my desktop items were all still there but the image for mp3s, .rar's, and other files were all changed. for example i have mp3 files that have the image my avast internet security program icon which i have installed on my computer and my .rar files now display the mp3 image, but when i copy or drag and drop them into a folder they display their original images. I've refreshed my desktop, I've changed the resolution, and even changed desktop background image hoping that it would fix it but no luck. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHATS WRONG!?

Hi, welcome to the forums :)

It is possible you've been inected with a Virus/Malware. There are a lot of popups that will tell you that you are infected when in fact it's the notification that's the infection.

Download MalwareBytes and berform a full system scan as soon as possible.

Just the simple thing of closing a pop up (using the X) in the upper right corner can install the virus. Touching some of these pop up virus with the cursor any place on them can install them. What anti virus program do you have and if you could tell us what website where you on.
