Prevent Icons from hiding under Gadgets? Hello all,
This is one pesky nook that Microsoft forgot to take care of.
Its annoying that mostly, desktop icons hide somewhere under the gadgets, and we have to close the gadgets to see it. Any smart ideas to Prevent it?
Disabling the 'auto arrange' icons helps a bit, but certainly not for new icons.
Thanks

If you hide your desktop icons, and set one of the taskbar links to your desktop folder, it's contents are all still available, just not visible on the desktop. You can still drag and drop stuff onto the desktop and it will appear in the toolbar there.
Alternatively, if you use Rainmeter skins instead of (or as well as) Gadgets, you can set their transparency, so you can see through them. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Acer 7520, Packard Bell dot se, Acer travelmate 2423 OS Win 7 Ult + Starter, XP Pro +Home, 2kAS, Linux Mint 8, SuperOS CPU AMD 64 Athlon X2 , Intel Atom N450, Intel Celeron M 1.50 Ghz Motherboard Acer Fuquene Memory 2.5GB ; 1GB; 2GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce7000m; Intel; Intel Sound Card Realtek AC57 Monitor(s) Displays 17" ;10.1"; 19" Screen Resolution 1440x900;1024x600;1440x900; PSU 19v Case Laptop Cooling Air Hard Drives WD 80, WD 320; Internet Speed 9.7Mb/s down 0.99Mb/s up Other Info ISP VIRGINMEDIA 10M cable broadband - D-Link DIR615 wireless router, 3Com OfficeConnect ASDL router used as wireless extender switch |

Very Innovative idea indeed,
For now I have pinned my fav icons directly to the taskbar (they are only a few).
However i'm surprised Mircosoft overlooked such a simple annoyance.
These gadgets shall be equipped with 'icon detectors' or something. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self Assembled and fully modded OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit CPU AMD manchester 3800 x2 Motherboard MSI K8nGM2-FID Memory 4 GB Graphics Card 9800GT (Overclocked) Sound Card Realtek Onboard 7.1 Monitor(s) Displays LG widescreen Case Self Modded,Acrylic side pannel with etching, DVD window,LED Cooling Slef Casted aluminium heatsinks, P4 CPU Heatsink on OC'd GFX Hard Drives 1 TB x 2 RAID 0, Gives easily 240 MB/s.

Alternatively, if you use Rainmeter skins instead of (or as well as) Gadgets, you can set their transparency, so you can see through them. Setting one of the Taskbar links to the Desktop folder is a good idea fafhrd, but using transparent Rainmeter skins doesn't help much, because even though you can 'see' the icon, you still have to go through the annoyance of moving the gadget out of the way to gain access to the icon underneath. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavillion dv5t (generation 1) OS Vista 64 bit and 32 bit (SP2) CPU Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz Memory 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) Graphics Card 512 MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT Monitor(s) Displays 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescre Screen Resolution 1680 x 1050 Keyboard Built-in HP Mouse Built in - Synaptics TouchPad V6.5 on PS/2 Port Hard Drives 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection Internet Speed Max Other Info ~ Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card w/Bluetooth ~ Blu-Ray ROM DVD+/-R/RW ~ Integ. But you can see the icon, and move the skin out of the way temporarily. Opaque gadgets give you no chance!
There is probably a trick by using dummy files in the desktop with, say, 1x1 pixel icons to block the area under the gadgets from being used by newly dropped desktop icons, but it would be a rather an unnecessary kludge. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Acer 7520, Packard Bell dot se, Acer travelmate 2423 OS Win 7 Ult + Starter, XP Pro +Home, 2kAS, Linux Mint 8, SuperOS CPU AMD 64 Athlon X2 , Intel Atom N450, Intel Celeron M 1.50 Ghz Motherboard Acer Fuquene Memory 2.5GB ; 1GB; 2GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce7000m; Intel; Intel Sound Card Realtek AC57 Monitor(s) Displays 17" ;10.1"; 19" Screen Resolution 1440x900;1024x600;1440x900; PSU 19v Case Laptop Cooling Air Hard Drives WD 80, WD 320; Internet Speed 9.7Mb/s down 0.99Mb/s up Other Info ISP VIRGINMEDIA 10M cable broadband - D-Link DIR615 wireless router, 3Com OfficeConnect ASDL router used as wireless extender switch |
