    RC to Retail

This could be in the wrong place. It could not be. But I figured this was the safest board. Here is what I am wondering....

I have a Vista computer right now that I am going to put W7RC on it. We are buying the pre order to W7 Pro upgrade.

When the pre order arrives can I somehow change the product key to the new one that I get with the pre order so that I don't have to reformat, reinstall Vista and then install the upgrade?

If not and I do need to reformat and reinstall thats cool. I am just curious at this point.

**UPDATE** I got the answer I was looking for. No need for more answers! If you need the same answer just click this link - https://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/14565-everyone-concerned-about-buying-upgrade-disk.html

The Windows 7 RC and Windows 7 Retail will not be the same build. It is advised that you reformat and reinstall to prevent any bugs being left behind by the RC.

So yes, the best thing to do when you get your retail disc/download is to re-format your hard drive, and install the retail version fresh. Oh, and keep your Vista disc around, because you'll need it to use a Windows 7 "Upgrade" disc. :)

Hi and welcome to the seven forums

Unfortunately it will not be possible to Upgrade from the RC (which is Ultimate) to the professional version as this would technically a downgrade.

however there is a mechanism in the upgrade that will allow you to install a fresh copy of windows 7 professional from the upgrade disk and insert the original vista disc as proof of eligability

    Thanks...

Thank for the info and heads up. You confirmed what I suspected. The laptop has the recovery partition of Vista. I doubt we would be able to find the disc.

Thank you for the welcome and quick response.
