If you are transferring from your laptop to an external drive, then you are limited to whatever connections your external drive has. Unfortunately, most external drives come with USB2 connector. Some have eSATA, and that would be your top choice. Some have LAN connection as well, then you can hook such a drive to your router and transfer the files through the network. But if your drive only has USB2, then unfortunately there is not much you can do (unless you want to rip the enclosure apart, but I guess you don't want to do that).

If you are transferring files between two computers, then connecting them with a network is easier than establishing a direct connection via either USB or eSATA (at the very least, you need special cables to do that). What you want to do is simply hook up both computers to a router, then run an ftp server on one of them and transfer files by using ftp. If that's your case - transfer files between computers - and you need help setting up the ftp connection, please let us know.

    Thanks for this reply.

Yes, the drives are USB only. I don't have any e-sata drive yet.

For transferring files between 2 computers, I was just using HomeGroup. I mean I have read\write option in the other computer, so I was just using that; but I would really really like to set up an ftp connection, and would be glad to get help about that.

    Thanks.

    What are the averages for

    from sata to e-sata
    from usb 2.0 to e-sata
    from e-sata to usb 2.0

    ?
SATA to e-SATA = normal SATA speeds that you would expect with internal drives
Anything USB 2 would go at USB 2 speeds
Have you thought about getting a docking station (e-SATA) and taking your drives out of the USB enclosures?
Yes I was talking about 3 PC's on a homegroup I found it to be so slow that I now use a USB3 docking station

If I use a e-SATA Docking Station, does it mean that I get to use 1 external drive at a time? I have 3 external hard drives, and I will need to use at least 2 of them at the same time. I have 1 e-SATA connection on my laptop. I know that double docking stations exists, but I don't know if I can use both external drives from just one e-SATA connection on the laptop, and what will the speed be when I transfer from Drive1 to Drive2 when both are inserted in the e-SATA Double Docking Station.

I was researching about e-SATA and docking stations (and also researching about if there is any way to remove my USB 2.0 port from my laptop and adding a USB 3.0, but my researches so far showed that Intel Chipsets are only using USB 2.0, I need to make more research about that. Do you have any information that if I can install USB 3.0 Port(s) on my computer and make it work with my motherboard and chipset?).

Till I can make more research about USB 3.0, an e-SATA Double Docking Station seems to be a good choice.

Thanks for your replies and information.

Changing ports on a laptop?? no chance!! It would be cheaper buying a new laptop
It is possible to get express cards but that again depends on your laptop having an express port, have a look here; Add USB 3.0 support to your laptop with the new Buffalo Technology USB 3.0 ExpressCard IFC-EC2U3/UC | Krunker

I have never used it before, that is why I didn't think of it I guess.
