Unable to play my old dos games on new laptop?

I upgraded to a new compaq laptop last year with windows 7 installed, and now i'm unable to play my old dos games and its giving me this error message when i try to play :

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows
you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether
you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then
    contact the software publisher.

I have dos box and it's still not working!! I would of assumed windows 7 would of had a program installed that would automatically allow you to play these games? What do i need to do? I'm not always keen or too confident at changing my computers settings is there a laymans guide at all?

    Thankyou in advance :)

I will bet you are running 64 bit win 7. It has no built in emulator dor 16 bit dos.

Win 7 32 can run some in compatibility mode and has some third party apps to do that

    DOSBox is your friend.
    Google DOSBox.
I run all kinds of old games on 7 64bit inside DOSBox.
