Adding pop up info to files

Hi All I regularly download useful programs and archives etc and would like to be able to add and edit info that shows up when you hover your mouse over the file. Generally downloaded archives etc are not very descriptive and I would like to add stuff to help me remember why I downloaded it in the first place! Any ideas on software or utilities etc that would allow this (or hacks) would be appreciated.

Not sure of any software, but if you right click on the file, got to the properties tab and then maybe click the advanced button, you can change most of the stuff it shows.

You should be able to right click on the icon of the specified program, then click properties. If icon is a shortcut, there should be a shortcut tab after you click properties. Within the shortcut tab, there's an area with a textbox called "Comment". Erase whatever was in there before and then type your new comment.

NOTE: This method only works for shortcuts, not actual files or folders.

    Hope this helps!

    EDIT:

DAMN...too much detail means people beat me to the punch lol there was no reply before i posted my response.

I always assumed it was common sense, but when you download files, why not rename them to something you'll remember?

Thanks to most people for taking the time to reply... when I right click on a file go to properties and then advanced all I get is the advanced attributes box which says choose the settings you want for this folder - nothing to be added or edited etc? The reply about the "comment" seems to be closer to what I want to achieve but I would like to add a comment to the actual program/archive icon. I can see the point about renaming as you download however, sometimes I may download three or four mp3 tagging programs to try them out and keep the best so I would then have several very similar names!

so it does! i was rather surprised when just trying that.
Yeah, it definitely won't do it for shortcuts, just the files themselves. Right click > properties > summary (tab) > advanced, then change the summary info.

maybe it's my version of windows 7 or something but if I right click an exe or rar I don't get a summary tab in properties?

Yeah, I'm afraid you can't change it on exes or rars - just files like music, video and documents :/

Only if the programs have identical names. I download a lot of freeware to try out in some of my VMs. I name each file with the app name and version number. That would be even faster than editing any mouse-over info.

    Has a free trial.
    File Notes Organizer 3.5.1.4

Here is a neat for pics from MS
Tag pictures so they're easier to find
I found this don't know if it works.

    Browse to Folder
Right-click the Windows "Start" button and select "Explore." Locate the folder that you want to add a note to using the "+" and "-" icons in the left pane.
    Add Comments Capability
Click the "View" drop-down box in the Windows explorer and select "Details" for a detailed view of the files and folders. Right-click the "name" heading and a new list will appear. Scroll to the bottom of the list and select "More." Scroll through the list of "Details" and locate "Comments." Place a check mark in the box next to "Comments." Click "OK" to save the changes.
    Add Notes
Locate the folder that you want to add notes to in Windows Explorer again. Right-click on the folder and choose "Properties." Click on the "Sharing" tab and click "Advanced Sharing." Place a check-mark next to the "Share This Folder" option and input any notes that you wish to add into the "Comments" section. Click "OK" to save the changes and add notes to the file folder. Note that if you are using Windows XP, simply click on the "Summary" tab and input your notes in the "Comments" section. Repeat this process on all file folders that you want to add notes to
