Have you looked in Windows Explorer rather than on the desktop?
Are there some you remember that you cannot find using a good search tool?
Is it possible they were in fact deleted by you or someone else? Or do you think they are just misplaced?
If they are not in the recycle bin and are in fact deleted, you have to use drastic measures like running a file recovery tool, which usually has mixed results. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Ignatz Special; 4 speed manual gearbox; factory air conditioning; one of one OS Windows 7 SP1, Home Premium, 64-bit CPU Intel Sandy Bridge i5-2500, not overclocked Motherboard Gigabyte H67A-UD3H-B3, full ATX Memory 4 GB Crucial DDR3-1333 Graphics Card none; graphics are integrated on CPU Sound Card onboard: Realtek ALC892; external: USB Behringer UF0-202 Monitor(s) Displays NEC 90GX2-BK 19" LCD Screen Resolution 800 x 640 Keyboard Leopold Tenkeyless with Cherry Blue switches, USB Mouse Logitech or Microsoft optical wired; either USB or PS 2 PSU Seasonic SS-560KM, modular Case Antec Solo II Cooling CPU: Scythe Big Shuriken; Case: Scythe Slipstream 800 & 500 Hard Drives System: Intel 320 Series SSD, 80 GB;

I've also had reasonably good results with Recuva, if that's the path you need to take. The secret is though, to recover your data asap. The more you use your PC the less likelihood of a good recovery.

Thanks all, this happened whilst i was working on my pc, im sure the files are still here somewhere only not on my desktop or sat in my profile documents folder. example i have a word document that was in my documents but is no longer there but i can find it from the windows search bar and if i open file location it takes me to my documents but the file is not there. It has been moved to somewhere else but i cant find it but can open the document.

Click on the arrow next to Documents, do you see 'My Documents' under Documents, or 'Public Documents'?
It could also be in hidden files and folders. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Bruce ... somewhere in his 40's OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit SP1 CPU Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz, 2400 MHz Motherboard INTEL/D975XBX2 Memory 4 GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro Monitor(s) Displays Samsung SyncMaster 914v Screen Resolution 1280 x 1024 Keyboard Standard PS/2 Keyboard Mouse Microsoft PS/2 Mouse PSU Rocketfish 700 W Case G.Skill Gigabyte Chassis Hard Drives 2/500GB each ...
