    sleep/hibernate greyed out

I have two new laptops (an HP and a Gateway) with Win 7 Pro on each, and set up
exactly the same. On the Gateway, the sleep and hibernate work fine.
On the HP, the sleep and hibernate are greyed out.

    Using cmd: powercfg -a
The Gateway shows " the following sleep states are available ... Standby (S3),
    Hibernate Hybrid Sleep"

The HP shows "sleep states not available..system firmware does not support
standby state" "legacy driver vgasave .. prevents this standby state"

How can I get my HP to support sleep/hibernate?

    Henry.....

    Henry hi and welcome.

Often with HP's the newest BIOS will fix that problem. Before you upgrade the BIOS be sure to make a backup and have a restore point just in case.

If the BIOS upgrade does not repair the problem video drivers can also prevent sleep/hibernate as I found out on my DV-7.

    Excellent points JMH +1

With that said you may want to check for driver updates if the above suggestions don't work.

    Enable Hibernate:

    1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2. In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
    3. When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue.
    4. At the command prompt, type powercfg.exe /hibernate on, and then press ENTER.
    5. Type exit and then press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.
