Things that should be top most window won’t stay that way

It’s really starting to tick me off

I use RocketDock to put an Icon bar at the top of my screen
Set to auto hide but be on top so easily accessible
In the past it worked fine but over the last few weeks it’s been under stuff about 2/3 of the time
And it’s getting worse nearly every time I want something from it I have to minimize every window on my screen to get at it

And over the last week or so iv noticed similar problems with windows Media player
It’s set to “Always show now playing on top”
It works for a while but as I work with other windows it will keep going under them from time to time

My bottom task bar is working fine though always on top as it’s meant to be


I haven’t a clue what could be causing this problem but it’s really starting to annoy me

If you are getting unusual behaviour which you did not have before, then check that malware is not affecting your system.

Download the free version of this;

Malwarebytes

and run a FULL scan after updating the database.

If it finds anything, post the log here.

OK, you need to delete that malware of course, using the program. Then reboot your machine and see if that has solved the problems. I think you will find it has in this case.

You also need to install a good anti-malware program. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials;

If you are connected directly to the internet, then you also need to use Windows Firewall.

what about AVG Internet Security ?
im using it but then I guess this somehow got threw
im having it do a scan and see what it comes up with

The only one I personally recommend is MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials).

I also use one other for certain purposes, ( but not at the same time and not on the same machine(s), and that is Avira;

Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus

I wont use any others. Although I come across lots of different stuff all the time.

Although I have been known to make disparaging comments about some stuff, I usually prefer to avoid commenting.

Anybody can use whatever they wish, a lot depends on how much you know about a particular product, your experiences with it, and various other factors.


Did removing the malware with Malwarebytes solve your problems? Or have you not removed it yet in order to test your anti-virus program?

I havn't removed it yet as I want to see if AVG finds it
also some times just deleting files dosent fully remove it
they can re spon if not properly removed
if AVG finds it then maybe it will know about any other aspects of it

Yes, I thought that might be what you were trying. Please do let me know what happens.

Don't leave it too long with the malware though, They can cause damage which removing will not repair. The longer you leave it, the more damage they can cause.

Also, you wrote that you had these issues for a while, so it does not look as if your anti-virus program found them, if it had you would not have had the issues.

AVG didn't find them
and when I went to delete them one was allready gone
I had windows do a file name search but it found no other copies

my computer was working perfectly when I deleted them so no way of knowing if anything was fixed

did you have to buy Microsoft Security Essentials ? or is it free

MSE is free

And AVG is garbage still......

While no antivirus is perfect or will catch everything 100% of the time, AVG is still garbage.

I also have malwarebytes and superantispyware on some of my machines, but I only run them "on demand".

Well, I would say that if it was misbehaving before, and it isn't now, that it is most probably fixed. Come back and tell us if it isn't.

The problem with a lot of malware is that you can remove the malware, but that doesn't automatically fix the damage it caused. Sometimes, if it is "only" spyware then removing it fixes the problems. In other cases it doesn't. You can try troubleshooting the actual problems now that the malware is gone, but often the only satisfactory solution is a new install.

"stay on top" is a function of windows
short of a FULL re install I have no idea how to fix it

win7 mesed up the system restore thing that was so nice in XP
unless you notess there is a problem within a day or to it is just usless
in XP we could go back a month if we wanted in win7 we just get a few days

Indeed, I am aware that "Stay on top" is a built in function. But there is no way of knowing what that malware affected.

I don't use system restore, or the built in backup. They have caused me problems. I use images. If anything goes wrong, I just restore the last good image.

If it is just a "System malfunction" of some sort, then using another program to "Force" the "Stay on top" may work.

hmmmmm
im not sure if that would work on the dok as it's not like most programs (running with a thingy in the botom task bar to right click on)
it had a drop menu on it but it's one from it's own programming im not sure if another program could add anything to it

should work ok with the vid's though
I used to use WinPins a lot but it wont work with win7
will be nice to get it replaced

The Moo0 Window Menu Plus works on everything I have tried it on, although some items may be greyed out on special software. I like it because it is extremely useful, very unobtrusive, ( I don't want 799 buttons added to anything at all, nor do I want anything blinking and flashing! ), and it gives me a lot more useful functions than any other similar software I have tried.

Nothing should get corrupted. Windows 7 is completely different to XP, and some of the things that were done in XP are now either superfluous, or downright dangerous in Windows 7.

There are various ways and means of checking things, it depends what you want to check.

Things like registry cleaners, various "optimisers" and stuff like that, will only cause you grief in Windows 7.

im just looking for somehting to do a genrall check and see if everything is still right
something has caused things to stop staying on top when told to and id like to fix it
