AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ Can run 64bit Windows right

i know this is a stupid question, I remember when the AMD 64 line was released, it was the first backwards compatible 32bit and 64 bit processor right?

I can install Windows Vista 64bit on my old XP run HP computer with the 64 x2 3800+ 2GB ram and 200GB HD with no problems right?

I'm about to sell this old HP PC I have, and the buyer wanted Vista, so I charged him for an upgrade and i went ahead and did a legal upgrade with it. Now I'm just about to install Windows Vista (He doesn't want 7)

It's an older Gentleman, he wont have any problems with 64bit right, might as well run 64bit over 32bit.. even tho he is still only using 2GB of ram.

thanks for windows 7 forum answering these vista questions

Also it would be easier to just do a XP to Vista upgrade right? by while running in XP insert the Vista disk, click install now, and do upgrade?

right.. or no because I can't upgrade from XP 32bit to Vista 64.. I can't upgrade the bit can I, do i need to do a clean install

    Should run vista 64-bit alright

Yes to upgrade form a 32-bit to 64-bit you will have to do a clean install. Best to put everything that cant be repleaced right away on a thumb drive or a cd/dvd-r. As for vista it run ok for just general os stuff like web serfing, videos, music and such.

Well I had the same processor (AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+) when I Built my last iteration of my Desktop in mid '07. I installed Vista Home Premium x64 and had no issues at all. I would still be using it if my Mobo hadn't crapped out and I got a nice deal on a x4 9500.

Due to the architectural differences between 32-bit and 64-bit, you cannot upgrade from one to the other from within the existing OS. It has to be a clean install, meaning that you need to boot from the installation media.

With Vista, especially, I wouldn't bother with x64 on a system with 2 GB of memory.
