First, I'd be inclined to initially disable all Internet Explorer's Add-ons. If that cures IE re-enable them one at a time to see if the error re-appears.

Although you haven't posted your computer specifications you have told us that you're using Windows 7 Home Premium, which does not have the facility to do a system backup. Upgrading to Win 7 Professional will let you carry out a full backup or you might want to consider third-party software such as any on this comprehensive list:

As for system restore, it depends how much disk space you've allocated for it and how many restore points have been created. Once your allocated disk space is full Windows will delete the oldest restore point to make way for the newest one.

Welcome to the forum rich48, can you tell us a little more about your machine, what make model do you have, is it a desktop or laptop, remember we can't see your machine so have now idea what you are using.

Can you clarify which Explorer stops working, in you subject title you say Internet Explorer but in your post you say Windows Explorer ?

System Restore will only go back as far as it has points for and that depends on how much room it takes up.

When you mention recovery and back up files just what are you using to back up files.

Please post back with as much detail as you can give and I'm sure one of the experts will be able to help you. :)

I must correct you there as Home Premium does have the ability to do an image.

Thanks Joan, you're quite right of course. I'll have to call it a senior moment as bad advice is worse than no advice at all.

Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer are two VERY different things.

I had and still have the same problem.
Got so bad that I had to do a Win install with the loss of all data and software.
It only took 2 days for it to reappear.
With so many folks having the same problem you would think MS would issue a fix.

Have you downloaded anything to your desktop lately, a picture perhaps ? That happened to me about a year back and the pic was causing explorer to crash.

I wish it was something like that but it was much more serious.

After reading the posts here and checking the net I think, IMHO, that this is a wide spread problem and MS should have created a fix by now.
    Thanks for the input.
