Yes, you can use the upgrade with a proper XP license, and you'll have to do a clean install. With Vista you can do an in-place upgrade for like editions, or a clean install. Check out the various threads.

Not at all. You can upgrade to Home Premium or Professional if you buy those upgrades.

Installing Windows 7 Home Premium in October

In October, can I just install the Win 7 Home Premium upgrade over the RC version I’m currently using? Or . . . should I just wipe my hard drive and then install the W7 upgrade? Or . . . do I have to go back and re-install Vista Home Premium (which came pre-loaded on my notebook) so as to provide a Windows base to upgrade from? What’s the best way to go? Does a "clean install" - as you use the term - still need to see existing Win OS (XP or Vista) files on the hard drive in order to install properly? It wouldn't be an "upgrade" otherwise, would it? Maybe you can shed some light on this issue for me. Thanks!

thunder, from what I can understand, when using a "upgrade" version you will be asked to swap DVDs just to prove that you own a genuine DVD
if you own vista, you can do a straight forward upgrade, no clean needed

Correct. You should be able to enter the original key I believe rather than have a disk, since the disk is generic, or if you have the harddrive with the installation live so it can check it. Then you should be able to do a format if needed and do the clean install.

Or with Vista as you mention, do the actual upgrade over the existing installation, but I understand they need to be like editions, i.e. Home Premium to Home Premium or Professional to Professional, and x86 to x86 or x64 to x64.
