"Can't create temp folder archive" on any .exe

This is a PC which has it's Downloads User subfolder linked to Storage E, which seems functional except that now no .exe can be run without receiving the following error:



Strange that it refers to 7zip which is not the default program here for .zip files and the Firefox .exe being run in screenie is not a .zip; stranger still the error persists even when 7zip is uninstalled.

If you move the .exe to the root it will run fine, causing me to believe that either corruption or a recent change has caused installer to look for temp file on same partition as .exe.

Has a recent Update caused installer to look for temp folder on same partition? This could be a real problem for those who've linked User folders to storage partitions. Anyone else seen this?

1st let me say this may be out of my box. I see a Default_ZIP regisrty entry in this Downloads folder. Should that be in there? Couldn't this folder be moved to the root without any problem.?
I'm interested due to my wanting to install a SSD with only the OS on it.

That reg file is from Shawn's tutorial to restore default file associations. Yes, it will copy to C: root and run from either there or Downloads.

So far it is .exe program installers that will not install for want of a temp file.

Also found many others with the Firefox.exe and the 7zip error not able to create .tmp file. No one had an answer. There were some suggestions to check for badware though.
Help, maybe? It is from an old vista forum.

Problem persists even after reimaging and reinstalling OS partition. When any .exe is attempted from the Downloads folder linked to E, it fails to create in the temp folder. If the same .exe is moved to C, it works fine.

Has there been some change made in an Update that will affect any linked User folders ability to run .exe's?

Both Firefox and IE9, but many of the executables are from way back and used often.

I wonder if Shawn has seen this before.

I used to get a similar message when I tried to save a download OR move a file/folder to a different location. A window came up and asked where I wanted to extract the items to. This stopped on its own however.

i sort of found the solution

to solve this annoying problem, there are 2 ways

1. run it as administrator

if still not working, then try

1. right click on the file
2. properties
3. go on the compatibility header
4. click on run compatibility troubleshooter

when the troubleshooter opens

1. troubleshoot the program
2. only check the "i dont see my problem listed" box
3. click next
4. it will ask about the version of the windows, in which the particular program had worked before, AGAIN "i dont know"
5. click next
6. click on "test the program"
7. if it worked or not, click on next
if it had worked, click on "yes, save these settings for this program"
if it hadnt worked, click on "No, try using different settings" after that redo number 6 and 7 until it does!
