    Monitor sleeps, computer doesn't -> Help :O

    Well I've come across a problem. For some reason, when I go to Start > Sleep, my monitor enters a stand-by sleep mode, but my computer won't. Since the monitor has its power off and I can't see anything, and the computer is still on, I have to manually shut down by holding the power button down. It doesn't sound like the computer is really doing any work, but it just won't go into sleep, and I don't know why. It was fine last week.

    Thanks for any help

    Also: When I boot up the next morning (having manually powered down the night before) I have to boot in safe mode before I can restart and boot normally. If I boot normally, it stays a little bit longer than normal at Please Wait... before it gives me a password field, and then it won't go past the next screen (I forget what it says...windows is loading maybe).

    I have this same problem: put the computer to sleep and the monitor loses video signal, but the case fans, hard drives, power LED on the case all stay powered up. It's like the OS goes to sleep but the power to the computer stays on.

    I asked about this problem on the TechNet forums, and someone said it could be a problem with Gigabyte motherboards. The good news is that I installed build 7229 and my computer slept fine. So this problem should be fixed with the final version of Windows 7. (I had problems with Explorer crashes in 7229 so I went back to 7100.)

    This is completely due to the type of power state u set in the bios , there are different states such as s1,s3 etc.. You have to set the power state option to s3 in your bios in order to turn off your system except RAM in sleep mode. If you set it to s1 state then all the system components will seem like running but in a slightly reduced power mode.Hope this helps!!

    Well, I checked my BIOS, and my suspend mode was set to S3 as it should be, factory default, so that's not the problem in my case. Thanks though

    I never knew about this. Where would that setting be located? Or does it only apply to GIGABYTE boards?

    S1/S3 are sleep modes supported by most newer motherboards. Go in to the BIOS and check to see if the sleep state is set to S3. Older motherboards only support S1, but it has to be pretty old.

    But where would it be located? In what menu?

    The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby ( S1 S3 ) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep
    The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S2)
    The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Again, my computer would sleep fine last week and all the time before that.
