Can anyone verify if this is (still) true?
All versions of windows now need a key to activate them, both OEM and retail
The OEM copies used by the major manufacturers are pre activated with a standard key for practical reasons, as they are installed from image files which also contain the inevitable bloatware
They are however also sold with an individual unique key which is normally found on the authenticity sticker affixed to the computer. if you check the key on a new laptop via software it will report a different number from the one on the sticker - which has to be used for any re-install.
If you purchase a legitimate OEM disk this will be provided with a unique key
As for bios locking - yes this has been used by some manufacturers, but any cracks for defeating this system are illegal and have no place being discussed here
