Windows OS for Acer Aspire One?

Hi i am looking for some advice,

A family member has an Acer Aspire One netbook, and they would like a Windows Operating system installed. I have already installed my copy of windows XP Home on my own identical netbook, which runs fairly well, but not great. So basically i would like to knw if i got Vista or 7, would either of those run better than XP?

The specs of the AA1 are:
    16Gb SSD
    1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
    1Gb RAM DDR2

    Thanks, Rob

Windows 7(and Vista) needs more than just 16GB and it won't run properly with 1GB of RAM, you should upgrade your storage and add an additional 1GB of RAM :)

    Hello Rob,

I would go with a Windows 7 edition instead of Vista. While the Windows 7 minimum system requirements are below, it would be best to have at least 2GB of RAM for better performance.
    • 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
    • 1 GB RAM for 32-bit Windows 7 OR 2 GB RAM for 64-bit Windows 7
    • 16 GB available hard disk space for 32-bit Windows 7 OR 20 GB for 64-bit Windows 7
    • Graphics card or chip that supports DirectX 9 with 128 MB memory (to have Aero theme enabled)
    • DVD-R/W drive, or bootable USB port with Windows 7 USB flash drive
    • Internet or phone access to activate Windows 7.
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

1GB is the bare minimum for Windows 7. It won't run exceptionally well. 2GB is the sweet spot for actually noticing a speed difference.

So basically, it's XP unless I upgrade the netbook?

If that model of netbook has Windows 7 drivers available for it at Acer, then you could install say the 32-bit Windows 7 Starter or 32-bit Windows 7 Home Basic if you like. It's just that it will not run as well with 1GB as it would with 2GB or more. That's all. :)

I think most of the Acer Aspire One (new gen from last year) have drivers for "Windows 7 Starter & Basics" edition, at least...and the ability of 2GB Ram...

Knowing the price for 1Gb Ram (DDR2 it should be) so cheap actually, you can give a try for a Windows 7 edition even a Home Premium x32 bits are listed for Netbook Aspire One:

You'll definitely need more storage space. A fresh install is around 10GB.
