    Strange problem with hard drive

I am running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. I can access my 160 GB SATA hard drive in explorer. But when I try to upgrade windows 7 from installation disc, I get an error saying 'windows could not retrieve info about the disks on this computer'. When I open the properties of the HD in device manager and click populate, I get an error message saying 'volume information for this disk cannot be found'. And before anyone says it, I have turned on the virtual disk service and set it to automatic. It might be unrelated, but the sound of the system is gone inspite of installing latest drivers and I am getting random classes missing errors when I open something, eg. opening jpegs and opening Network and sharing center.

    Please can anyone help me??

"Upgrade windows 7 from installation disk"? You already have ultimate, what can you possibly upgrade to? or do you mean you're trying to run a repair install?

Try to go to HD properties and click uninstall, then unplug and reconnect the hard drive.
note: i tried this with my pendrive, and no data was lost.
