My desktop is not being saved on power off Hello,
I had a power failure while my desktop computer was in sleep mode. When I turned my computer back on after the power failure it looks like many files were lost.
All my icons were reset to the left on the screen, all my Firefox bookmarks are gone,
my screen resolution changed, etc.
After I restore my desktop settings and Firefox, I turn off my computer using the start menu, start it back up and find that none of my changes on the desktop or
Firefox were changed. It's like I didn't make any changes.
Anyone have an idea whats wrong.
Thanks,
Keith | My System Specs |

Keith Do a system restore. Pick the date BEFORE the power failure as your restore point. I tried doing a system restore but there are no restore dates earlier than the crash date so nothing was accomplished.
I will rebuild but I'm having the same problem, no matter what I do, no matter what changes I make when I turn
my computer off and then back on all the all the changes are lost. It's like it reverts to original windows.
It's like a different person is logging in that made the changes and turned the computer off.
As far as I can tell all my data is still on my disk but the computer doesn't save and start up with the same person.
Please help,
Thanks, Keith | My System Specs | | |

Welcome to Seven forums Dowser. Are you using the same account that was logged in at the time of the power outage?
You can try creating another admin account and see if that helps. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built Desktop By DataTech OS Windows 7 Ultimate X64 SP1 CPU Intel i5-2550K, Differing ~4.4-4.8GHz No built in GPU Motherboard ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Memory 16GB G.Skill Sniper 2133MHz 4x4GB Graphics Card ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 460 Sound Card Onboard Realtek 5-1 Monitor(s) Displays Samsung P2570HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Old, beat-up Dell USB From 10 yrs Ago Mouse Gigabyte m6900 wired PSU Corsair HX650W Case Inwin Dragon Rider Cooling Hyper 212 EVO w/two Noctua fans, push-pull, @1300 RPM Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB for OS, 750GB Seagate MomentusXT for data, 500GB Seagate Constellation for storage Internet Speed 8-19 Mbs down, 3-4 Mbs up Comcast Cable Antivirus Norton Internet Security Browser IE 9, Opera when needed Other Info 4 case fans, LG BluRay-RE, ASUS DVD-RW, Mr. Fusion power generator with flux capacitor, 1.21 gigawatts. |

Thanks, Keith Suggestions :
1. Run a full virus scan. Do it in safe mode if you have to.
If you need extra help looking for viruses, intall free malwarebytes. It is one of the best in the business. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (free)
2. Do a system file check which will look for corrupted files, and if any found, it will try to repair them. SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
3. Do a disk check looking for disk errors and bad sectors etc. Disk Check | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Acer Aspire 7741Z OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, SP1 CPU Intel Pentium P6200, Cores 2, 2.13 GHz Memory 4 GB Graphics Card Intel HD Sound Card unknown Monitor(s) Displays 17.3 inches Screen Resolution 1600 x 900 Hard Drives 640 GB, 5400 PRM |

In addition to the good advice already posted, I would recommend running checkdisk ( <--link), as a power outage can corrupt indexes and occasionally result in this type of issue.

Thanks everyone. I did the disk checks and all was ok. I created a new admin and copied over all the files from the my original admin and all seems to work properly now except the firefox bookmarks. After reading in this forum how to locate the bookmarks I did a search on "bookmarks" and the result was:
"C:\Users\Dowser\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\rhe6bfoh.default\bookmarkbackups
The trouble now is after going to "C:\Users\Dowser" there is no folder called "AppData"
any ideas why "AppData" doesn't show up? I looked for hidden files but found none.
Thanks,

Thank you all very much.
Unhiding files allowed me to import my old bookmarks. Now all is back to normal.
I was really worried there for a while that all was lost.
