You just need to get the drivers for the card or the motherboard.

If the drivers are all installed all you have to do is click the tray icon and select your network (SSID) from the list. Then enter your network key (password) to gain access.

    Ok

Thanks you fellows - will have to get the drivers from the net as it (adapter card) didn't come with a disk.

Strangely enough though when I put it in and plugged in the cable it just worked.

Hmmmm perhaps I just got lucky?

Some things will just work if the drivers are in the system. Now Dells, they r a pain in the neck, but just as easy.

It seems that XP had a driver for it.

    Hmmm

Yeah B just tried getting the driver and the card is no longer supported by D-Link ,and thats what it's telling me - once it's (the card) installed it loads it in XP.

So my query is now if it is already in the system why is it not working with the new hard drive install??

I have just put back in the old hard drive and it works flawlessly.

Perhaps if I take the thing out put the new hard drive back - reinstall the card and it might wake the machine up??

Maybe I should go looking for the driver and get it onto a USB stick.

I doubt if D-Link drivers are in XP so you will have to go hunting. Are you getting to the internet through the ethernet port on the motherboard ?

Well, you can download SlimDrivers Free - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Downloads and run it to see if it will find a driver for you. Be careful with it, it is known to say you need drivers for hardware you don't have.

    No such luck

I have device manager showing me the drivers are there for the D-Link (with the old hard drive) but perhaps because this is a fresh and different XP disk perhaps the D-Link driver isn't on it. The mobo ethernet port doesn't want to work with my connection with either hard drive in any case.

This is the strange thing my mate had it connected via the mobo port in dial up mode at his place but because it was so slow he took to using dongles. Plus we both have the same ISP.

Sorry B didn't see your post above will keep an eye out for them.

Like B said go to download.com and get the ethernet drivers, it`s either a broadcom or an intel driver. Does the motherboard eth port show anything in device mgr ?
