Not able to rename Partitions

Hello everybody,

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64.. I'm not able to rename Partitions C,D and E.. But EASEUS Partition Master shows the desired names, but its not reflected in My Computer.. How can i fix this issue?

How did you get your C partition to be "logical" instead of "primary"?

This is a Win7 environment? I don't see a "system reserved" partition, which is normally the "active" and "primary" partition in which boot manager files go. This isn't critical, but I don't understand how you managed to get your D partition showing as "system", and your C partition showing as "boot" and "logical".

Can you please post a screenshot from DISKMGMT.MSC? Please expand it to full-screen first, and spread the columns so we can see all the text.

It would also be helpful if you could download and install Partition Wizard v6 Home Edition (which is free). It's very similar to Easeus but may give a slightly different presentation on a screenshot. Again, please spread the columns so we can see all the text.

Easeus isn't showing the "active" partition, so it's not that helpful in answering my questions. Both DISKMGMT and Partition Wizard will show that info.

Ok. Those new screenshots are very helpful.

They show that it is your D partition ("soft") which is actually your "active" and "primary" partition on the drive (which is what a WinXP system partition would have looked like). It's about 100GB, so I'm guessing it may actually have been your old WinXP partition at one time... or maybe it even IS your current WinXP partition, in a multi-boot WinXP/Win7 environment.

Am I right here? What is the history and evolution of your current 100GB D partition? Do you have a boot manager menu that appears at boot time showing both WinXP and Win7, or does it go directly to Win7?

Anyway, it looks like you then probably installed Win7 as a second OS, targeting it into a "logical" partition (which is perfectly valid). And that's how we now see the C partition as "logical". Ok. No problem at all.

Do you mean you want to "label" these three partitions something other than "system", "soft", and "ann,rs,others"?

What happens if you use the now-installed Partition Wizard to do this re-label function, instead of Easeus? Just select the partition you want to re-label, right-click, and select the "label" item on the popup menu.

You should have no problem setting a label on D and E right away. To change the label on C you'll have to let Partition Wizard trigger a re-boot, in order to complete that step... because you can't relabel the C partition while Windows is up and running. So Partition Wizard will kick in at re-boot time to finish the job.

When you get back into Win7 after the re-boot, all three partitions should reflect your re-label.

Please let us know how it goes. Use Partition Wizard to re-label your partitions.

Lots of different ways to skin this cat, and Partition Wizard is just one.

But I believe the re-label of C will require a re-boot to actually complete.

Actually i had XP 32 bit OS installed in C. I upgraded to Windows Ultimate 64 bit and removed the folder "Windows.Old" that had traces of previous XP OS. So i've only one OS on my system right now. And moreover, I've re-sized all these partitions using EASEUS after installing Windows 7. Earlier D partition had some 50 GB hardly.

The desired labels are being showed up only in the applications related to Partition Management like EASEUS, PARTITION WIZARD and DISKMGMT.MSC. But this is not reflected in My Computer. Please see the screenshot.

But after performing this, i'm just able to see the new label in the PARTITION TABLE picture, not in My Computer. When i rebooted my system, Partition Wizard worked in BOOT Mode and set the LABELS. BUt the same thing goes again.. its reflected only in Partition Table picture not in "My Computer"

I now understand what problem you're describing. Your Computer screenshot shows the issue.

And yet, you say that the correct new label values DO appear in Partition Wizard as well as DISKMGMT... just not in Computer! Bizarre.


What happens when you right-click on say E in Computer, and select Properties? What do you currently see in the title bar... the new label value you've just set, or "local disk"?

Is the label area highlighted and available for changing? Can you type something in there? What happens if you change it this way?

For example, here's a partition of mine WITH a label:

What do you see in your case for C, D and E through this Properties method?
