temp folder in c:\users

Hi I have recently noticed that in my c:users folder I have a folder called TEMP, I am certain that it wasn't there before and it is modified every time I boot up the computer. When I look inti this folder there isn't anything in there. Is it normal to have this folder?

Temporary folders can be placed anywhere. Check the environmental variables (Start-> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Environment variables). Usually there are two temporary folders, TEMP and TMP defined for every user, as well as for the system. I usually put them away where I am unlikely to look, just to reduce clatter. It could be that in your system one of these folders is set to be in C:\Users.

Otherwise, check if you have installed any new programs recently, some programs create their own temporary folders.

Finally, if the folders is accessed at start-up, then you could look into the system's logs to find out which process is looking into the folder.

Welcome theterrier to the windows 7 forums.

One reason that you might not be able to see any files in the c:\users\user\temp folder is that they are either system or hidden files.

To really see them.
you need to go to control panel, folder properties and select view option, uncheck the options for hidden system and while y our at it, uncheck the option to hide files extensions of known types.

Some probrams write files to the tem directory when they are executed, yours might be programs that start when you boot your computer.

Does anybody else get a TEMP file in their users folder?? I can delete it but it reappears when I run a program eg media centre, adobe reader, don't know why as I said earlier I'm sure that it never used to be there.

This can happen if the User profile service failed to load so it creates a temporary profile in C:\Users

I would leave it alone if I was in your position

But does this mean that there is something wrong with the user profile service?? There are 2 users on my computer and it does the same on both I can't see both having a problem.

theterrier, did you look at your environmental variables? Where do you have your user and system temporary files?

Also, your posts are somewhat confusing: you wrote in the first post that this folder is empty, but then you say that when you try to delete it, then the file NTUser.dat cannot be deleted. So is the folder empty or not?
