    create a batch file with

    Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep

    in it.

    right click desktop>new>text document
    edit it
    copy and paste contents inside
    save
    close
    rename to sleep.bat

    if you're courageous:

open pc, find the 2 wires for the power button connection to the motherboard. Splice in a wire, connect this wire to a miniature pushbutton which you place somewhere convenient on your desk.
The length of wire and it's size dont matter much. It just connects 5 v to mass to activate the powerunit.

Set in bios the power button to activate Sleep, do the same in windows.

Now you just push one button on your desk to sleep and wake.

    Very convenient

Now that's literally a standby shortcut on your desktop! I like it!

it is. i've hooked up an old microswitch from a microwave. I glued it to my monitor. You hardly see it, it's just the cantilever sticking out. It's almost a delight to use it.

    Hojnikb,

I'm happy to hear that you have an alternative. :)

If you disabled hibernation using Method One in this tutorial, then the sleep shortcut should then sleep instead if you still would like a shortcut.
