Windows 7 wont turn off my laptop after shutdown

Hi. I have been searching forever on forums for an answer, and i'm sorry, I can't find a solution that works for me.

I installed a legit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and when I shut down the laptop, it goes through the normal processes, says logging off, then shutting down, then the screen goes black, but laptop remains on. My power button is lit up, my fans still run. The only way to get it to physically shut down is to hold that power button down. Same thing when I try to sleep it, or even restart. All my drivers are up to date, no conflicts in device manager. What is going on here?

Well, its a brand new reformat & install. This laptop used to have Windows XP. Happened since day 1. I will try that now. Thanks.

You may need a BIOS update. Check the manufacturer's website.

Rich---> Safe mode did a shut down properly!!! Ok, now how do I figure out what driver it is now?

MacGyvr--> Always scared of doing bios updates, but may have to? Can you point me to where they are at for a Gateway ML6732 laptop?

You should always update your BIOS to the latest.

They don't list a 6732, but I'm assuming it's just a variant of the 6730:

Ok. Does it matter which one? I don't know if I have Oasis or not... and there's two, just "BIOS" and "Oasis-SR Bios".

I will try it.... Just have to make sure I am using the right one.

I have used that software before on other computers. I forgot all about it. Thanks. Ok, will do... just wondering which BIOS to update. What if I do the wrong one?
