black screen issues on boot, shutdown, and modify settings

I have an HP pavilion laptop with W7 Home Premium X64 - new install. The laptop has begun hanging with a black screen upon my request for it to shutdown, restart, boot, or anytime i attempt to run something which causes the windows 7 are you sure you want to allow changes to the computer message box. The only change made before this happened was a windows update. The problem started a few starts after this install. I have searched but most issues address a black screen with a completely unresponsive computer. Mine comes out of it within a minute or so. The screen also flashes a few times during this hangup.

Not sure how to address these. Quick Play was popping up on it's own the other day and freezing the computer. I disable it at startup so I am not sure how it's getting on.
