Download the Windows Upgrade Advisor here: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

When you've downloaded it, install it and let it scan your computer.

Make sure all peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, printer etc. are connected when you run the scanner and WUA will produce a report showing what needs to be upgraded.

This should have been done before you attempted to upgrade to Windows 7.

Did you do a clean install or an in place upgrade? If you did an upgrade, that's the source of the problem.

How much RAM? You may need more with an Atom.

Do you still have the HP bloatware after an in-place Upgrade? It is the worst of any make, with a wireless mangler that adds greatly to Startup and is inferior (like all factory utilties) to Win7 built-in wireless manager.

Go to msconfig>Startup and uncheck everything except AV and gadgets if you use them. Reboot and see if any write themselves back in, turn them off in their program preferences or uninstall them.

Next in msconfig>Services choose "Hide all MS Services" and see what's running that you didn't start. Uncheck everything, reboot to see what writes itself back in to tame it.

If this doesn't help, update your drivers. Check optional Windows Updates.

To add to what the others have said: I would look at Sysinternals Process Explorer and Autoruns.

These tools will give you a lot of information on what loads during boot, and what is currently running.

    Hope this helps!
