You CANNOT upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS. You might want to have a look at the tutorial Clean Install Windows 7 with an Upgrade Windows 7 Version.

I have a problem with these statements, since they aren't true.
the only time you can't upgrade from 32bit to 64bit is when you are doing an in-place upgrade. you can't do an in-place upgrade from XP to Windows 7 so the above statements are false in this situation.
If the OP happen to have Vista 32bit and wanted to upgrade to Win 7 64bit then the last statement would have some truth to it.

I am not trying to berate Dzomlija, I am trying to curb some mis-information that someone may read and then pass it around.

Situation,

I am building a new PC, therefore no OS is installed on my new Harddisk

I own a legitimate copy XP that I purchased last year, which HAS NOT been installed or registered on any other PC.

SO in order to save costs I purchased the WIn 7 64 Bit upgrade Version.

Question: In order to install the WIn 7 64 Bit upgrade Version MUST I have previously installed and registered my Win XP, I obviously do not want to do this as it is a lot of time and effort.

This thread went FAR off the rails talking about 32/64 bit and in place upgrades. Seems like a lot of that is happening on this board lately.

No, you do not have to do anything with XP to install from your upgrade disc. Pop in your disc, boot on it and have at your installation of 7.
