Yes. But, unless, I am mistaken, you will be stuck with a folder called windows.old.

The best thing is a clean install.

    Search for a cversion.ini hack.

Does that not depend on whether you have a full W7 edition or an upgrade edition? For the upgrade edition I understood that you have to have XP or Vista as the base.

depends on what version you buy. retail or upgrade, rc is utltimate, retsil is whatever you buy.

If you are looking to do an upgrade instead of clean install, it isn't recommended by Microsoft, and most of us.

You're supposed to be able to use the upgrade discs coming from the RC with it recognized as a prior genuine version of Windows. You're not supposed to be required to re-install Vista, etc. to get them to work.

Microsoft technically blocks your ability to have files, settings, and programs move over to the final version if you "upgrade" the RC to the final version, however. You're forced to fresh install, just like if coming from XP.

You can modify the cversion.ini file on the installation media to get the RC to "upgrade" with things actually transferred over, but it's not recommended and not a supported upgrade path.

Right it's not an "officially supported" upgrade path, but I did it and it worked great. Upgrade install from RC (Ultimate x64) to RTM (Ultimate x64) using the cversion.ini mod published by Microsoft. As I said, worked like a charm. Been running since RTM was first leaked without any issues related to the upgrade.

But, that said, clean install is always the best approach. My plan was to try the upgrade and if I saw any problems, I would clean install. In other words, nothing to lose by trying it. But since it went so well, I saw no need to clean install although I was prepared to if necessary.
