GeekSquad sez mobo shot, but pwr button stands-by

Gateway DX4640 with onboard vid, CPU/PSU fans spin but no signal to monitor whatsoever, no LED lights on mobo.

Owner took it to GeekSquat who said mobo is fried, but Power Button when pressed once starts blinking. When HD is unplugged it does the same, so I guess it can't be Windows sleeping.

Haven't seen this before - what does it mean when fully powered, power button blinks after being depressed with no OS/HD connected? It will hard shutdown, too. Anything else to check? Thanks, hardware amateur here.

    just the normal.
Make sure that bios is up-to-date. Seldom is on a new board.

    Listen for bios beep signals.

    Disconnect everything that isn't essential.

Go to mobo mfg site to see if any faq or driver update.

    Set/restore bios to defaults.

Check mobo for correct and solid connections.

    Thanks Karl -

No BIOS screen, no signal to mobo, no response to any keyboard input.

what happens if you put a graphics card in?

I assume you are using the on-board graphics.

    Oh yes,
have you tried a different power supply?

A quick search shows this problem going back a few years so the owner is not alone! Solution in some cases was a new motherboard, new power supply in another.

Not sure if that mobo has a speak for beep codes (some boards don't include the little speaker) so trouble shooting may require connecting a speaker first.
