how to search for file in a specific period

What is the right way to search for mpg files that saved last week I put the search in this manner. *.mpg 7/1/2011 - 7/7/2011 It said it couldn't find a file but I know I saved a couple in the past week.

Alas, that is one of several useful items Microsoft decided you don't need or want so it was removed.

I use a free third party software called Agent Ransack to handle all but the simplest file search functions:

    Agent Ransack - Download

    Code:
    ext:.mpg date:earlier this week
    ?... or
    Code:
    ext:.mpg date:7/1/2011..7/7/2011
I don't know what you are going on about GEWB, but the search built into Windows supports this just fine.

You can replace "date" with "created", "modified", "accessed" depending on what date you are looking for.
As far as I know, "date" is based on "modified" that could be wrong however.
And depending on how your system is setup, "accessed" may well never change.

Just as a suggestion for a Windows Search alternative, you might try a simple but powerful 3rd-party product named "SearchMyFiles". It's an on-the-fly mechanism, but it's intuitive and could certainly handle your request.

Alternatively, you could install another 3rd-party product named "Everything", which is an indexed-based search tool. It's search window is lightning-fast, and as you type more of your search value (including wild cards) the displayed list gets smaller. You could then just sort on the "modified date" column, and you'd probably see exactly what you were looking for. All partitions are indexed, subject to your setup options, and everything you do is automatically indexed in realtime. So you always have a successful search for anything anywhere, right up to just an instant ago.

My bad - you are correct. I shouldn't have replied when I was in a hurry. I should have at least expanded/explained that my response was related to the former search GUI of previous versions of Windows (discussed ad-nausium in many forums). The present "quasi-command line" function works well once the commands/syntax are learned and applied.

    Thanks for the correction.

MS must have changed something around because before when I was searching in a certain time frame this format worked just fine. 7/06/2011 - 7/07/2011 or even other formats worked well too. I'll look around for the combination that works now. I just remembered that I have installed a new pack recently which might have made the change. Service pack one I think it was.
