I have always had a momentary black screen during boot up, which sports the arrow at the end followed by the Welcome screen. I had it on my XP computer and now on my WIN7 computer. I assumed it is normal. I have 1TB of free space.

    phenix,
You can help us out by adding a little more info to your System Specs:

    UPDATE YOUR SEVENFORUMS SYSTEM SPECS

User CP (3rd item in the top menu bar) |
in left-hand column, under Your Profile, Edit System Spec |

Use Speccy - System Information - Free Download
and/or SIW to gather info for filling in the blanks.

Do me a favor and add the word laptop or desktop to the “system manufacturer” block.

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader, Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor

Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES button.

    Hi Karl,
Could you be a tad more specific what you want on System Information as SIW
is quite large. Will update more tomorrow.
    Thanks

    phenix,
Generally, what we want is the info blocks filled in on your User Profile.

I ask for more info as shown in my post.

SIW helps you find the answers. Generally speaking, Speccy will provide all of the requested info and is not overwhelming.

    phenix,
completely disable Eset and see what your performance is then.

    phenix,
Is this computer connected to the internet or to any other network?

    Hi Karl,
I disabled ESET and the black screen lasted between 35 and 40 seconds.
I am not connected to any networks.

    good.
Now completely remove ESET and install MSE (link in my sig). ESET is excellent, however, the least interring protection software is MSE.

Download, install and run Soluto. Soluto will make some suggestions to you.

I think I have solved the problem.
I have this quirk where I avoid changing any drivers.
So I went up on Dell and downloaded a vista driver for the BIOS.
I was running a03 and the new bios is a11.
This reduced the black screen to 6 seconds. Quite tolerable.
