Windows 7: Desktop Icons Invisible

Since a few days I am having an issue of not being able to display any shortcut (or icons) to anything on my desktop; I can, however, see the desktop full of icons when I view it from the explorer window i. e. when I press Windows+E key and direct myself to the desktop window.
Although I don't consider it as a serious problem, I still want it to be fixed or in fact I would also like to know what caused this problem...!
Please feel free to lay your solutions...

Have you tried right clicking on the desktop go to View and make sure Show desktop icons is checked.

You can also try ending the process & restarting it.. "Task manager" > "Processes">"Explorer.exe">"End process"> "File" > "Run"> "New task"> "Explorer.exe"

If you are using Fences or another desktop organization program it may be hiding them. Some Windows 7 themes not by Microsoft will cause display problems too.
