windows 7 won't run properly after update

this morning after leaving my pc on overnight i noticed it had updated due to being on the startup screen, so i followed it through as i normally do but this time there were no icons on the background, i noticed the display had a 5mm black border around it aswell, i managed to get to the main screen by typing my password on a black screen after the windows loading window, but now i'm stuck just my background picture with the same 5mm border.

heres pics of what happens in order:

it's not a virus because it happened last time windows updated, that time the fix as just a restart, though, this time that isn't the case and yes i have tried to get task manager up and start explorer but task manager wont even start!

Do a system restore. Also I would change your auto updates to let you know about an update but allow you to decide to install them.

mooseyt,

Welcome to SevenForums.

As suggested to you, I would like to second the advice to restore your system to an earlier restore point.

RESTORE TO A PREVIOUS SYSTEM RESTORE POINT

WIN | type SYSTEM RESTORE |ENTER | NEXT |
check Show more restore points (lower left)|
Highlight the desired restore point |
Scan for affected programs (lower right) |
make a note of affected programs |
CLOSE | NEXT | FINISH

WIN is the key with the wavy Microsoft flag on top.

mooseyt,

after you have a restored system, then I'll make some suggestions to locate the source of your problem.
