Hi there,

My labtop crashed the other day during a windows update and now all of a sudden I have no sound and my task manager is complete blank! I have no idea what is happening and really need some help!

Here are a few images of me trying to get sound back on and what the task manager looks like :(.

Thanks you!

Task manager not working:

EDIT:
I have just found another problem. My USB and CD ports cannot read any hardware plug into them.

Also when trying to install Malwarebytes I was confronted by this:

I waited for it to load for a while, but there wasn't any change.

Hi hurtle. Welcome :). The first thing I would do is run full scans with MSE and Malwarebytes (both free).

A system restore to a point before your problems began may be in order ;)

This will show you how to do a System Restore to restore your Windows 7 system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal user files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.

If you can't backup your personal data and you do a clean install all your files/data will be lost forever and you will not be able to recover them.

I just saw your edited first Post, that split screen is weird for sure. You can take your hard drive out of your laptop, put it in another computer and see if you can copy your data to some other media, eg, another drive, DVD's, etc. Then put it back in the laptop and do a full clean install.

That sounds like a good idea! Thank you =)

I'll post again with the result I get from the full clean install.

It didn't work. As with task manager the system restore window was blank. I guessed the buttons to click to get to the point where your laptop reboots. However on the reboot nothing had changed.
I'm not sure if this is because I was not able to select a restore point (as all I saw was a blank window), or that a System Restore just wouldn't work.

You could always borrow someone's copy, using your OEM product number when asked (should be somewhere on machine).

You are trying to do Repairs from the crippled OS which is not possible.

Try Malwarebytes in Safe Mode. If no go, Download and burn to CD or write to flash stick Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper, boot and run a full scan.

You need to make a Win7 Repair CD or use the REpair console on the Installation DVD: System Repair Disc - Create

Run Startup Repair repeatedly which automates most tests and fixes, making sure Win7 or it's 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred) is still marked Active: Partition - Mark as Active (Method Two)

If this fails, from the System Recovery Options run System Restore.

Next from the Command Line run SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot

If these all fail you can copy out your files: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Then run Factory Recovery partition, Recovery disk(s) which you made or came with computer, or clean reinstall with Product Key on COA sticker following these steps to get a perfect OEM reinstall: Reinstalling Windows 7

From my post #8 in this same thread.

Hello hurtle, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have a look at this tutorial at the link below for ideas on another direction you may want to go.
