Deleting files on DVD Writable

Does anybody knows how to "delete" unwanted files on DVD Writable disks. Do I need another piece of software to do that or WIN 7 can do it.

Today, I took out an old DVD disk that had files written on it previously by NERO in XP, and added files to it. That was OK. But then, I need to replace one of the files, so I went and delete it, but I can find anyway to delete the file, now can I add any more files to the DVD it seems.

I went back to XP and use NERO on the same disk, deleted the file, replace it with new one, and all are fine.

Any help appreciated for me to do this in WIN 7 environment.

Is this a DVD-RW or a DVD-R? If it's the latter (a writable disk), you shouldn't be able to delete the files. You can add files to the disk if you want, but deleting them as far as I know is not possible.

If it's a re-writable disk, then you should be able to re-use it but you can't delete only some files. You will have to format the disk using either Nero or Windows Explorer. Everything will be wiped from the disk so that you can use it again.

You can delete files from a multi-session DVD-R or DVD+R. You don't get the free space back, they just don't show up anymore when you browse the DVD. I've done it with Roxio on my Win 7 PC.

To delete file, you need to erase the entire disk. If you delete just one file on a RW disk, in my experience, the disk will sometimes become unreadable and no longer useable.

It is a DVD+R, and I've been able to delete files etc. using Nero Multisession. It is understood that the space would NOT be recovered, no issue there.

But using Win 7 Explorer, it can add file to the disk, but can not delete, so I can not make the file invisible. However, later I went back to my other computer using XP, and NERO Multisession was able to do the job.

Is there a way Win Explorer can do this, or I must get Nero or some other software to do the job properly?

Hi there

1) If it's DVD RAM then it should be no problem - DVD RAM can be formatted with NTFS, FAT32 or UDF -- in all cases Windows should see it as just an external drive and be able to read / write just like a Disk -- however DVD-RAM for domestic markets is declining so I doubt if your device is a DVD-RAM device.

2) If it's DVD-R or DVD+R you can't DELETE files but only add new data until the disc has been "Finalized" and to do this you need DVD writing software such as NERO.

3) If it's a DVD+RW or DVD-RW you can only treat this as a DATA disc if it's formatted in UDF and you have to use special software like NERO's In-CD which may or may not work in W7 -- don't know because with the price of external USB disks (around 60 USD for a 1TB drive !!)I rarely use DVD's any more.

Otherwise if it's an ISO you'll have to mount the drive and extract the files manually.
