    [solved] Move vs Copy

hi, i bought a new HD and i'm about to move my files using move instead of copying and deleting.

my question is simple, is move safe?
like when the system failure or power failure occur, is there any probability that my on-going file become corrupted or lost?

Generally, 99.9% of the time, it's safe. If you want to be real sure about it, download and install the software TeraCopy and copy or cut your files over. The software will check every files it transfers for errors, if there is, the transfer is not interrupted and there's actually a log you can look at and see what files failed.

    Really useful software!

As experienced system administrator, I always copy and, after having checked it's all ok, I delete.

I like to use software to copy things that allow for network failure such as coping 2gb over the network but then your network cable comes loose for a second, the software will see this and pause, it will be set to retry in 10 seconds and so the copy continues if network is restored.
(I tend to use RoboCopy as it is built into Win 7 but i'm sure there are more advanced/better ones out there :))

Obviously a power outage is different as the software would stop running (if the outage is on that computer) and therefore won't be able restart from where it left off.

While i have never had an issue with moving i still prefer to copy then delete

Moving the files won't delete the existing one until the move is complete. I.e., it copies the file and then, once the copy is complete, deletes the original.

    So it should be safe!

Of course if you want to prevent loss because of a power outage, put your computer on a "good" UPS with AVR.

If I am moving a single file, I generally just move it. If moving a bunch of files, I copy, then delete. But that's just me.

You can help avoid problems of partial copying in the event of problems by using something like SyncToy.Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - SyncToy 2.1
