Windows 7: desktop.ini

An icon appeared on my desktop titled desktop.ini. When I open it there is a bunch of code. If I try to delete it the system tells me my computer may not run correctly. Why does it have to be on my desktop?

It's a protected system file.
Look at option 1 step 4 to hide it check the box. Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide
