Not sure there can be such a thing as different makers have different policies and recommendations, but more importantly, different technologies require different maintenance. For example, there are several different battery types used in notebooks. There could be Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), or Lithium Ion (LiON), and even several types of fuel cell technologies are starting to emerge. They all require different maintenance.

So, I recommend you read your owner's manual. It will tell you how to properly maintain and use your notebook. If you don't have your manual, you should be able to download a copy from the maker's website.

That said, all electronics is adversely affected by excessive heat. So with any notebook, it is important to keep all the vents, fans, cavities, slots, bays, etc. free of heat trapping dust.

As Digerati said, there are a lot of variables to consider. Your owner's manual and manufacturer's website will have the best information for your specific machine. But you may find some helpful suggestions here:

Keeping the operating system clean and efficient is key, and those steps are the same as they've always been, and the say as with a desktop computer.

As for battery life, every month or so, drain the battery fully, and then completely recharge it, and you'll give the battery the best chance of a long life.
