Hmmm, not sure i have your problem.
Just gone through my home PC and i now dont have any lock icons.
As i said i have had a few in the past that just appeared (no more than 10 total over a few months) and these were on all 3 HDD's in my home PC (out of well over 200 folders). The others were there because i set the folders to Nobody. Ive just gone in and ticked un share as i posted earlier and these are now fine as well.

Ive checked a few folders and none of these have "Everybody" or "Authenticated Users" in the security tab and still i dont get the lock icon.

Fliplip - what permissions are in the security tab, also are they inherited from the parent, and who has ownership of the files? I will try to change my settings to match yours.

Also what security permissions do you think a partition for data should have?

    Edit:

Another question - does sharing a folder (without adding "everybody") remove "Authenticated Users" permissions from it for you?

I must admit ive never shared a folder without using Everybody. It just seems easier.
One thing i did a while ago was to run the take ownership reg hack on everything. I dont know why or if it made a difference but it didnt seem to do any harm.
Ive not gone in to the advanced security setting much and to be honest would know what i was doing unless i was following a guide for a specific reason so i cant help the the inherited question. I
Im at work now and wont be home for another 10 hours.
