Ultimate SP1 here.

Just curious if this is possible. I moved in with some roommates and I wanted to allow them access to some file shares on my PC across our LAN. Since it prompts on their end for authentication, I didnt want to supply my logon, as that would allow write access to the files being shared, and I only want to allow read access.

So I created a new local user account (friends) which they can use to authenticate when trying to access my shares. This works fine. However, I still dont want them sitting down at my PC and logging in with this friends account. Is there a way to allow a user account to exist, yet disallow interactive logon (and hopefully remove it from the welcome screen as well)?

Thanks much in advance. :D

Hi club,

If you go to "Network and Sharing Center" from Control Panel, and then "Change Advanced Sharing settings" on the right hand side, you should see an option called "Turn Off Password Protected Sharing"

If you click that, that should stop the prompts.

Interesting... thanks. I wasn't aware of that option. Im curious, what does it translate to as far as permissions when LAN users access the shares after that's turned off... the equivalent of Guest?

I'll test it out. Thanks again

I believe it will revert to the "Everybody" behaviour under "Permissions". If you don't want to give them write access etc, you will need to change that.

Not 100% sure on that one though... you may need to experiment.

you should be able to hide it from the logon screen (not overridable through ctrl alt del as this is disabled by default in win7) are your roommates n00bs or 31iT3 H4X0rZ?

by following this here How to Create Hidden User Account (Hide User Account from Welcome Screen) in Windows « My Digital Life

I just tested it on my machine and works fine, gone from welcome screen but can still grant remote access via mshome networking tested via xp netbook.

Dont do this to admin account or you may cause problems undoing it. to undo go to same value and change back to 1
