One thing that made a big difference for me in making explorer better in 7 was to download the free "Ultimate Windows Tweaker" app (very cool app btw, now optimized for 7) Ultimate Windows Tweaker v2, a Tweak UI for Windows 7 & Vista | The Windows Club

and (among many other tweaks), it has some check boxes under "additional tweaks" that allow you to easily add (or subsequently remove) "Move to folder," "Copy to folder" and "Take Ownership" to the explorer right click context menu. I find these to be very convenient to have and use them all the time.
Generally I don't like tweaking OS's, had too many bad experiences already with that. But I will give it a try (you'll never know, it you don't try), thanks for the link.

    thanks harpua.
tried Ultimate Windows Tweaker v2...the 'Copy to Folder' and 'Move to Folder' are useful to get things done fast... all the other 'Additional Tweaks' are also quite useful.

Glad you guys like it. You can run system restore right from the app before making any mods (can't hurt, just in case) but I have found the app to be very safe to use, although I have only used it to make very minor context menu changes so far.

Btw, if you want to thank me, don't forget about the "rep" scales (upper right corner of post, middle icon).

    have you checked out blackviper?

it's not a perfect list yet, but you may learn a bit more about services to disable, or better yet, switch to manual so they only start if an app requests it.
    Thanks Mickey, that's really helpful

Oh well, one more thing about Windows 7 i don't like is the 3d taskbar(super bar now?). Yes, it is way better but everything gets clogged in there. If you're on a laptop and have many windows open in a separate window, everything gets pushed to a single icon instead of multiple ones(unless there is an option i have overseen which is pretty likely so).
I think i got so used to xp, the change is taking more than it needs to.
if you goto taskbar properties, there is an option you can change to only combine taskbar icons when full, this will make the programs in the taskbar look like they used to in vista/xp instead of the icon view, and also avoids combining icons except when you have many programs running. for me thats the setting I like, because I am used to the vista/xp taskbar style..

the only thing i dont like about windows 7 (and vista) is the lack of the up,cut, copy, paste toolbar in the explorer...i used them a lot in XP and it felt pretty much faster than right clicking and doing the same. The keyboard shortcuts are fast but i rely mostly on mouse than a keyboard.also the 'up' tab is much faster than breadcrumbs.
i also really don't like how vista and win7 explorer have no icons. wtf is MSFT thinking? i found a great way to get them back, but it doesn't work with win7 yet, only vista.

    it's called qttabbar

you don't know by any chance of a tool that brings the "upper folder"button back?

or the "cut" "copy" "paste" buttons?

Instead of telling you what I don't like, I'll tell you what I do like.

    1. When you have extensions enabled and go to change a filename, the extension isn't highlighted.
    2. Having a search in the start menu.

That's about all I can think of right now.
