What don't you like about Windows 7?

@Wreck, the target audience Microsoft is aiming there product for has no need for creating Junctions, Hardlinks, or Symlinks outside of special cases. So why should they make UI tools for something less then 0.5% of people are going to use? They built the fundamentals into the system, let third-party developers expose them for those who need it.

Real people, like my mother and grandmother, have no need for creating Junctions, Hardlinks, Symlinks.
I agree 100%. Very well said. I would rep you if I could; but I have to spread some rep around.

    Links

I agree that links could be confusing for many users.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my PC. My friend (who hates Windows) helped set up some auto-mounting symlinks for my music and video files. When I deleted a link, which was pointing to my music files, the "Garbage Bin" showed my music files!
They weren't actually deleted, but my friend wasn't able to tell me, how I could determine whether or not a file was in the "Garbage Bin" or if it was a link that was pointing to the file!

Also, I thought that I read (on another blog) there was something strange about the way Windows handles links.

Only thing I don't like about it is that I don't have it yet. Getting a laptop within the next 2 months and I would imagine, obviously, that it will come with it. I just never liked the idea of not having a store bought, full, standalone version of the OS. I have built my pc's from scratch, so, dealing with laptop software won't be a welcome thing when I get it.

Ok, the problem isn't that *nix does some things in certain ways. The issue is why does MS insist on doing the things it does.

For instance, two people commented on my question about having to be in an Admin shell to create symlinks by saying that you have to do a number of things as Admin in *nix operating systems. Well yea, but that's not the point.

Why do I have to be in an Admin shell to create a Symlink? That makes no sense at all, I do NOT have to use SU or SUDO (note the correct spelling) in *nix to make a simple symbolic link, and they are extremely useful. Why does a common every day user in Windows have to learn to jump through the UAC hoops to create simple symbolic links?

Why do they have to find a 3rd party piece of software to do it without a command line?

Those are the questions that plague many of us. Why doesn't MS trust the user? And don't give me the "because users are all dumb" argument, lest you reveal yourself as a MS employee.

I've been a SW Engineer, Sysadmin and security engineer for three decades, so I know of which I speak. Microsoft finally got around to understanding User access and permissions. But they fail to understand some really basic things. And to be honest it mostly looks like they are afraid of appearing that they are copying ideas from other operating systems. Which is just dumb, since they've been stealing stuff from everyone else for decades anyway.

I would not be so quick to point out that you have been working with computer systems for 30 years, especially when your lack of knowledge is apparent. A seasoned technician has the experience and the wisdom to comprehend every operating system is flawed and can never work perfectly for everyone; the best to hope for is a happy medium. It is expected that Microsoft will not be able to make everyone completely satisfied and it is understandable that you are one of them. But you have choices; you can continue to complain and show your ignorance, you can take the time to become skilled at Windows 7 or you can opt not to use Windows 7. To come here and bash Windows 7, it has become obvious that you have absolutely no clue as to what you are doing and in turn is just wasting our time and yours. We are here to help the community and if you wish to gain knowledge we are eager to help you and anyone comprehend the underlying code, design, inner workings, and infrastructure of Windows 7.

I don't agree, I think it is a complete failure of imagination that just because YOU don't understand sym links that more people can't figure them out.

MS put in Libraries and I submit that less than 0.5% of the people care for or use them. So why does MS get to make Sym links for us, yet not provide a way for the average person to create them? It's my biggest complaint about MS and Windows. And most of the people who defend MS. A supposition that because something MIGHT confuse people it shouldn't be made available.

Then why sell computers at all. Don't they confuse some people? Wouldn't it be better to avoid confusing people and just leave them with pencils and paper.

But I give up, you people are all too busy slapping each other on the ass and agreeing with MS that users are stupid and should not be given tools as a result.

I'll just leave it with this: the thing I dislike most about Windows is the MS snobs who can't see what would make it better.

So in order to use Windows 7 you say people have to read several hefty books?

Ok there are a few problems here, I'm just not sure I have time to point them all out.
    Thanks! Great point! I agree.

It bugs YOU. Does not bug everyone. I have it set to max and it does not bug me.
I'm glad it dosn't bug you. If we all vote on this here, the thread will be swamped. Lets just agree Millions of users don't like (Hate) it. Me included. (oops I voted.)

This thread has at the moment over 160 pages of posts, yours quoted here above is post #1,608. At least a couple of hundred of those posts have clearly been about a user fault or misunderstanding, quite a many about problems caused by third party software and / or drivers, nothing to do with Windows 7.

Only possibility to correct these misunderstandings or show the poster where the fault is, is to post a response here. Sometimes it is positive.

I'm sorry if you don't like it. I ask you to read this thread through: a big part of the posts are quite positive.

To please you, I will bail out from this conversation now. I am truly sorry I upset you by opposing your opinion.

    Still sincerely, Kari
Sigh.... I have to agree there is a great deal of good to be said about "7". Good point Kari. We all learn from contrasting view points. Disagree please! Don't bail. what would anyone learn then. It's only the flames that bother me personaly. I do understand some people are passionate about their view, but we can keep conversation civil (Please?).
Can we get back to the negative part now?

I thought stating what you don't like, (Bashing) is the premise for this thread. Some of @Wrecks statements seemed a little to general to be helpfull, but he too seems to have a peeve that is important to him. Perhaps the specific points of his post should be adressed. :)

BTW - I believe an avarage user needs a menu bar in explorer. I wonder who's bright Idea it was to hide it by default.

It doesn't bug me either. I always set it to the max. What bugs me is people who turn it off, gets infected with malware and then blame Microsoft for making an insecure OS.
