container folder deletes

this has happened a few times and just happened again, i open a folder say called music that contains quite a few other files and folders ive selected one of those files and used the shift delete to delete the folder and instead of just deleting the highlighted folder the its deleted the container folder music that holds everything, this time ive lost quite a few things.
why is this happening? it dosent happen all the time but it has happened a few times now.

I don't have an answer for you. but check the recycle bin as your deleted items should be there and can be restored

thanks firebird but using the shift delete misses the recycle bin altogether

I just tried this, are you sure the item you want to delete is the focus and not the entire file?

if i were you i would enable the check boxes for folders enabling you to select several folders/files together.
this way you can be sure the files selected are the ones deleted,
open a window and click organize then select folders and search options, in the window that opens click the view tab and select the checkbox for " use check boxes to select items "

just to make sure ive made myself understood im permanently deleting the txt files in the test folder, when i hit enter the folder test disappears assumed deleted as well , this has happened 4 times now, i didn't think it was possible to delete something that was in use.
