I don't think it's the mouse. Why would that cause the programs to become inactive while I'm typing?

Try installing Microsoft Intellipoint to see if it fixes the problem. Download IntelliPoint 8.2 - FileHippo.com

I already had IntelliPoint installed, but it was 8.1. I downloaded 8.2 and installed it. I'll see if that makes a difference and let you know. If not, then I'll use a USB mouse and see if there's any difference. Thanks.

You are using the mouse through the PS/2 port?

The wireless? No. It came with a USB receiver.

Okay. So I downloaded the new IntelliPoint and tried a wired mouse - makes no difference. I tried to time it while typing this morning, and it actually seems to be every 30 seconds, the typing cuts out and the program flashes, as if it's gone inactive. I've looked at the task manager processes to see if I can see something, but it moves so fast, I can't tell anything.

Strange... can you run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt?

Yes. I did, and it found no integrity violations.
