General state of computer usage. I am 82 years old & my first computer was a Tandy Radio Shack TRS 80! It was great! It had 2-5 1/4 floppy drives. Input was with a cassette recorder. ThE OS was "Basic". I was King of all input & output! No virsus, Bloatware, only bugs that were mine & I had to sort them out! I wrote great programs in the "Spaghette" language. Very important programs!!
Now we are at apoint where every body is trying to "Hack", "Pop Up" you, give you a "Virus" Sell you Vagra, Penus enhancement, & porn sites.
I dare not "download anything" Even if you pay for it, in fear it will not do what you were told it would do or not install because of a conflict with other software.
Case in point, The Adobe "Cannot Open File %APPDATA%. The old 1606 error that everybody knows about & nobody fixes it.
I BOUGHT McAfee Anti Virus software. The software program is excellant, here comes "the sting in the tail". It also includes "McAffe Online Backup".
Of course It installed automatically. I filled out what was to be backed up & when.
Very shortly I received an error "You Quota has been exceeded !"
What quota!! What program created the error! Not a clue!
Finally I deduced that it was the McAffe online backup. I clicked on the Online Backup Icon & it went to a website That stated "You have exceeded your quota" please increse your quota to xxxgb for $95." Or something like that, I was seeing red about that time. Ther is no way of uninstalling this unwanted software that I paid for. I still get the "Quota" error, Adobe "Update" pop up that creates the "1606" error, The "Update Checker" pop up, Etc. Afetr about 5 or 6 pop ups, I can use my computer!! No way to cancel the POP UPS & ERRORS!!!! Sorry for my Rant I am about to quit what used to be a pleasureable expirence. It comes down to GREED!!

@Tullynally:
Wow neat story!
I was too young to use the TRS 80 or Basic.....but sounds like it was pretty reliable and a good workhorse!
YOU HAVE IT NAILED RIGHT ON THE HEAD....
The problem today with computing and OS for the consumer anyhow is the rampant greed that has infected every company today!
I think most of the problems with the OS and software today is due to these companies trying to squeeze out the last red cent.
What happened to the days when a "good" profit was balanced with other aspects of business, hint "customer satisfaction"???!!!!
Post back again, tell us more about your experiences!!!! Love it! | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number hp pavilion 6680t OS win 7 home premium 64 bit CPU core i5 760 Motherboard iona (from MSI) Memory 6 gb Graphics Card ati 5450 Sound Card real tek 888 |

@Tullynally, I agree wholeheartedly. I stopped upgrading many software a long time ago if old version or freeware alternative is good enough, e.g. office 2003, quicken 2009, paint.net, pdf-xchange.
On the other hand, if you are running a software business, how are you going to bring in more business if you don't continue to add more bloat, I mean more features, to your product?
Windows 7 is a good example, ms has done a great job this time, maybe too well. I know I won't be upgrading in a very long time. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Professional 64bit |

Me, Tullynally Again!
I just received an Email Christmas card written in MS Power Point! Wow! It knockd my woolen comfy socks off!
Power point has come a long way since I used it for presenttaions.
By the way I dumped MacAfee on all six of my computers even though I had time left. I have gone completely to MS Security Essentials. No pop ups. No dire warnings to update! No offers of not wanted software!
MS Security Essentials just keeps me updated on dialy issues & is not intrusive.
I also agree, I like Windows 7 64 bit & probably won't update in the near future (whats left of it). My only compliant is that I must have both IE9 32bit & IE9 64 bit. I can't watch watch TV on the 64bit IE, so I have to switch to 32bit IE9.
It is that DAMM error 1606 error again!
"All the kings horses & all the kings men can't put Humphrey-Dumphrey (Adobe Player) back together again!
If you are down because of the economy, remember I was born in 1929. The start of the great "Depression".
We survived! Just as you will too!
Merry Christmas & Happy New year to one & all!
