incorrect icons showing when customising taskbar icons

    Hi everyone,

I'm having another complete nightmare problem on my brand new Dell XPS running Win x64 Ultimate.

When I try to customise what behaviour the various icons exhibit on the taskbar (and I'm taken to CONTROL PANEL- ALL CONTROL PANEL ITEMS-NOTIFICATION AREA ICONS), some of the icons are correct and truly represent the proramme which they are aligned with, but some are incorrect and some are blank and some are duplicates of icons for other programmes that are shown elsewhere.

I've tried everything I can think of, but nothing works.

    Can anyone help, please?

    Many thanks,
      My Computer

Danny, I really can't thank you enough: 3 hrs and a massiove panic over this new laptop and you just sorted it!!

    Thanks so much, mate.

Just out of interest, any idea why this sort of thing would happen on a brand new machine?

Might it be linked to my first problem that I still can't mend (capslock simply closing the icon naming box down when i try to re-name a folder icon ive placed on the desktop when i try to switch between upper and lower case)?

No worries mate,This happens a fair bit as you begin to accrue icons for the system tray and sometimes they just get mixed up. Nothing to worry about. You may notice some icons are no longer in the list, these will show up again the next time they are used.
Let me see what I can find out about your other issue.Im sure ive seen this problem here before.

That really reassuring Danny; really grateful.

I'm off out on the Wye just now, but assuming I don't drown (or get dragged in by a 30 lb'er), i'll be back on tomorrow!

    Cheers mate.

Ok mate I found a few bits but nothing definitive. Blame seems to point to some of Dells pre installed software that will have come with your laptop. Problem with Caps Lock Key? - Tech Support Forum. See if removing quick set from the start up list helps (type msconfig into the start menu and its under the start up tab) Just uncheck it and confirm re boot.

And could you fill out your specs to aide us to help you - System Info - See Your System Specs
