    What's a better upgrade?

    what's a better upgrade for my computer which is

    Gateway GT5656
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
    AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6000+ 3GHz
    GeForce 8600 GT 512mb
    3GB ram

    in the end i would either have 4GB ram (using these + the ones already in my comp: http://www.bzboyz.com/ProductDetails...6&ProdID=20223)

    or instead of using the GeForce 8600 GT 512mb
    using a GeForce 8600 GT 1GB:

    I think you mean the 8600 1gig card right? One thing abt mixing ram it can cause randon glicthes. the ram would probably help more unless you do gaming. it depends on how you use the computer

    Honestly I would upgrade the graphics. The difference between an 8600GT and an 8800GT is like night and day. I did that upgrade a few years back on my older machine, and man the gaming gains were great (say that five times fast)

    Go for the RAM because:

    1. The 8600GT is old and is now considered low-end (because mainstream cards are much faster now).

    2. The 1GB of memory is just a marketing strategy, you won't benefit from it in a mainstream card.

    3. The 1GB memory is DDR2, which is much slower than GDDR3 (which i suppose is what your 8600GT 512MB has).

    Guys, he wasn't thinking of upgrading to the 8800GT, he said 8600GT and linked to 8600GT. The only difference was the card he was thinking off has 1GB versus 512MB.

    Personally, I would never make this upgrade. Instead, get a higher end card. A small RAM increase won't hardly be noticeable.
